Second Positive Case of COVID-19 in EOHU Region

2020-03-18

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU), has confirmed a second positive case of COVID-19 in the EOHU area. The male in his 60’s is from Prescott-Russell, and was tested on March 14, 2020.

Following testing, the individual was discharged home where he remains in self-isolation, following Public Health direction. The individual experienced mild symptoms of fever, cough, headache and generalized aches and pain. Late in the day on March 17, the individual’s test came back positive for COVID-19.

While the public health investigation is ongoing, it is known that the individual returned from a trip to the United Kingdom on March 11, 2020 and developed symptoms later that day. The EOHU is actively engaged in the process of contact tracing for other individuals who may have been in close contact with the man.

“Having another confirmed case in our area is not unexpected given the transmission of this virus around the world,” says Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the EOHU. “This case is also imported from outside of Canada. Our current containment process aims to identify and isolate individuals to limit the spread into our community and it is working.”

Dr. Roumeliotis adds that at this point, there is no evidence of local community spread, and the risk remains low for the region. “We will continue to work collectively through personal hygiene precautions and community-based public health measures in keeping with the provincial government’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Ontario.” He adds that these measures may expand, depending on circumstances. At this time, measures include social distancing, limits on mass gatherings, closure of public and private schools, licensed daycares, churches, public libraries and many businesses such as gyms, cinemas, dine-in restaurants, bars and nightclubs. For a full list of closures, visit www.eohu.ca/en/article/2020-03-17-1.

The EOHU continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health, local hospitals, healthcare providers, as well as provincial and national partners to monitor, detect and contain any cases of COVID-19 in the community.

To reduce the spread of germs including the flu and COVID-19, the EOHU recommends that you:

§ Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer

§ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just cleaned your hands

§ Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand

§ Practise social distancing; do your best to keep at least 2 metres away from others

§ Stay/work at home as much as possible and avoid non-essential outings

§ Stay at home if you are sick

§ If you are over the age of 70, stay at home unless absolutely necessary

PLEASE PRACTISE SAFE DISTANCING AND AGAIN CALL IF YOU WOULD LIKE EXTRA INFO OR REQUIRE ANY ASSISTANCE. PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO OTHER SENIORS.

Good morning 55 plus club members, this is an update of the club and a note about the Corona Virus. As many of you are aware our activities and events have been shut down and or cancelled and refunds in some cases will be issued once the social distancing and pandemic status has been issued. Today I am reaching out to remind everyone of the importance of keeping in touch by phone or email with those most vulnerable. As well it is an important time to help people in need within our group and outside. Basically, if you know someone who is alone, please reach out to them. We will be calling all the members who do not have email in order to ensure they are kept up to date. As well we will be calling individuals within our group just to make sure they are okay and to offer support as needed. If you have a concern about someone, or if you yourself require something please reach out to me at 613 370 3701 and by email at russell55+club@gmail.com.

Together we are strongest, and no one will be left behind or alone if I can help it.

Thanks to everyone for your support…………………Elisabeth

To all members of the 55 plus club,

After careful assessment, many consultations and conversations, we will be stopping all the 55 plus club activities and events up to and including the April 1st luncheon. Listed below are exceptions for now. We will continue to monitor the situation and will review the information we have at the end of March to make decisions after April 1st.

If you require more information you can go the Eastern Ontario Health unit website and their Facebook page for updates everyday.

Regarding, the trip to Upper Canada Playhouse, we have no information yet as to a cancelation of the show. But we have cancelled the meal and we will be refunding the meal portion of 22 dollars per person. More information about the show will follow next week. We will keep you posted.

Regarding Rapa, the show has been postponed by Rapa itself.

We have cancelled the trip to Stanley farms as well.

Regarding the trip to Gaspe, we have contacted the travel agency. At this point the trip will still go and people can pay now, or by April 14, 2020. Once you have paid ANY monies they will not be refunded if you choose not to go. The only refunds will be if Ottawa Valley cancels the tour.

This decision was not made lightly, and I have spoken personally to the head of the nursing for the Eastern Ontario Health unit. The recommendation was made, and all the parties concurred that this is necessary at this time.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 1 613 370 3701, or to email me at Russell55plusclub@gmail.com.
